Making History at Wales Rally GB

Accrington Elfyn stage 8_1 (2)marshals were out all weekend to support Wales Rally GB. The team helped set up the National Service Park at Deeside on Thursday and then headed out to the remote mountains above Bala to the Aberhirnant stage for the 2 stages on Saturday; one to be run at night.
Just before the running of the night stage the weather turned and with windy conditions the light rain turned to fog.

“We were in the middle of nowhere, in the fog, the night and the mud. I thought it was game over,”

“We were in the middle of nowhere, in the fog, the night and the mud. I thought it was game over,”

The team saw World Champion Sebastian Ogier arrive at their stop control with a punctured front left tyre and damaged brakes. The remote location meant he was out of radio contact with his M-Sport team. “I was trying my best to try to fix this car which was quite bad. The front left was missing the discs, the pads, everything. In a very short time we had to find a solution to find some brakes but we drove the last stage and we made it.

The rally leader is through stage 15 safely increasing his lead to 49.8s. "It's totally mad. Just totally mad."

Sunday took the marshals out to the Brenig stage and the car wash at Abergele.

Elfyn Evans with local lad Daniel Barritt navigating won Wales Rally GB-their first WRC victory. Elfyn is the first British winner of the event since Richard Burns in 2000. M-Sport also took the constructors title for the first time since 2007. Congratulations!

A Day of Firsts

Sunday 8th October 2017 was notable for a number of reasons. New marshal Amanda (AMSC member) experienced her first event at Wigan Three Sisters; the Adgespeed Stages. Amanda helped to run the Main Time Control, the first time control of the day.

A Renault Zoe has made history after becoming the first electric car to take part in a competitive car rally. Welsh ex-junior rally champion and current Junior BRC driver Cameron Davies and navigator Scottish Junior rally driver, Andrew Blackwood made Rallying History.

And of course, first place went to John and Alex Stone in the Fiesta. Enjoy the in car footage from Stage 12.

British Rally Championship PR Special event at Bellingham.

Accrington Motor Sport Club members recently volunteered at the Pirelli International Rally, a round of the British Rally Championship.

Just before the start of stage 3, the crews had a stop-off in Bellingham, about an hour east of Carlisle. ANWCC Chairman Bob Milloy conducted interviews and provided another brilliant commentary. The event gave local residents and fans alike an unrivalled opportunity to get up close to the cars and crews. Bellingham

The event also gave the British Rally Championship a real presence in the village. Many residents were unaware of the event taking place just a few miles away in the Kielder Forest and were thrilled by the noise and spectacle of the cars.

A small team of marshals from Accrington Motor Sport Club joined Deputy Chief Marshal Dave Brodie and his team to help set up the event and run the special time control.

Organisers of the British Rally Championship are looking for exciting new ways to widen the rally’s appeal to both existing fans and new audiences and this special event in Bellingham did just that. It is estimated that over 250 people came out to welcome the cars into the village. Not your typical Saturday afternoon, perhaps?
